Work out materials and cost before you buy

Ten calculators built around the two questions every renovation hits: how much do I need to order, and what is this going to cost. No sign-up, no email, results update as you type.

Material calculators

Work out exactly how much tile, paint, flooring or concrete to order.

Tile CalculatorHow many tiles and boxes you need for a floor or wall, with a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. Paint CalculatorGallons of paint needed for a room, after deducting doors and windows, for one or more coats. Flooring CalculatorSquare footage and boxes of laminate, vinyl plank or hardwood, with waste and total cost. Concrete CalculatorCubic yards of concrete for a slab, footing or post hole — plus how many 80 lb bags that works out to. Wallpaper CalculatorRolls of wallpaper needed for a room, accounting for pattern repeat and match waste. Mulch & Gravel CalculatorCubic yards, bags and tons for mulch, topsoil, gravel or sand at any depth. Drywall CalculatorSheets of drywall, joint compound, tape and screws for a room.

Cost estimators

Ballpark what a renovation will cost before you call a contractor.

Kitchen Remodel CostWhat a kitchen renovation is likely to cost at budget, mid-range and luxury levels. Bathroom Remodel CostCost of a full bathroom or powder room renovation at three finish levels. Roof Replacement CostCost to replace a roof by material, pitch and number of old layers to tear off.

Why estimating is the cheapest part of a renovation

Almost every renovation overrun traces back to a quantity decision made too early: tile ordered off the floor area rather than the laid pattern, concrete ordered without accounting for an uncompacted subgrade, a roof priced off the footprint instead of the pitched area. The arithmetic is trivial; the cost of getting it wrong is not.

These calculators exist to close that gap in about thirty seconds. Each one shows the working, states its assumptions, and rounds in the direction that protects you — up on material, down on nothing. Where a figure is genuinely uncertain, such as renovation cost per square foot, it returns a range rather than a single number pretending to be precise.

How to use the results

Material calculators give you a number to take to a supplier. Add your local tax and delivery, and check the coverage printed on the packaging before you order — manufacturers change pack sizes more often than you would expect. Cost estimators give you a range to sanity-check a contractor's bid. If a quote lands 40% below the midpoint, the scope is probably different from what you think it is, and that is worth asking about before you sign.
